Update from the Superintendent, 3-21-2020

Office of the Superintendent

March 21, 2020

Dear School Community Members,

We have learned that a staff member at Bayberry School has tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is the first confirmed positive case in the district that has been brought to our attention. Information regarding the identity of the employee will not be released, and we request that the staff memberís privacy be respected during this difficult time. The only information I can share at this point is that the staff member is not a resident of Watchung.†

Our responsibility to students, employees, and residents is to inform you that Bayberry School students and staff may have been exposed to COVID-19 through contact with this staff member. Though the exact time the staff member contracted the virus is unknown, we are advising all students, staff, and families to monitor themselves for any symptoms, such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath. If you should develop one or more of these symptoms, please call your healthcare provider for guidance.†

The health department officials in the town where the employee lives will conduct an investigation to determine any individuals who may have an elevated risk of exposure and communicate directly with those individuals. They will also communicate with our local health official.†

In the meantime, please continue to wash your hands, maintain proper hygiene, and practice social distancing by remaining at home with your family. Should a family member develop the symptoms listed, please isolate the person from other members of the family and call your healthcare provider.†

For more information, we urge you to consult the resources available through the New Jersey Department of Health and the CDC. In addition, NJ 211 has been activated to answer New Jersey residentsí questions about the virus, prevention, testing, and travel. Simply dial 2-1-1, or text NJCOVID to 898-211 to receive information and stay informed. These resources can help you protect yourself and your family.††

We remain committed to your health and safety and will provide an update when we have more information from our local health official that we can share. Thank you.

Very truly yours,

George P. Alexis
Superintendent
